Series 3: Workbook 3A Companion Course
Specialized Instructional Design
Course Description
This workbook introduces learners to specialized instructional design practices that extend beyond traditional methods. By focusing on adaptive learning technologies, gamification, and immersive VR/AR design, learners will discover how to integrate advanced strategies into their practice. The emphasis is on both innovation and practicality: using free or accessible tools to build prototypes while developing the mindset to evaluate when, why, and how these approaches add value.

Chapter 1
Adaptive Learning Technologies
In this chapter, you will explore what adaptive learning means, how it differs from traditional personalization, and why it has become a key focus in modern instructional design. You will examine the building blocks of adaptive systems, including learning analytics and decision points, and learn how to design flexible pathways that support diverse learner goals.
Chapter 2
Gamification in Learning Design
This chapter explores how gamification differs from full-scale game-based learning, how game mechanics connect to instruction, and how design decisions can turn simple activities into engaging, progress-driven experiences.
Chapter 3
Virtual and Augmented Reality for Learning
In this chapter, you will begin to explore the differences between VR, AR, and mixed reality (MR). You will learn how immersive design principles shape learning experiences and practice storyboarding a simple scenario. By the end of the chapter, you will have created an immersive storyboard—an artifact that not only demonstrates your ability to design for emerging technologies but also adds a distinctive, future-oriented piece to your professional portfolio.
Chapter 4
Strategy & Application
This chapter focuses on making those choices with purpose. You will look at how to evaluate learners’ needs and decide which approach will help them most. You will consider how to introduce new tools into a course without overwhelming learners or breaking the flow of instruction. And you will learn how to gather feedback through small-scale testing, ensuring that new strategies are effective before they are scaled up.
Chapter 5
Final Prototype and Reflection
The final stage of specialized instructional design is moving from plans and storyboards into a working prototype. By this point, you have practiced adaptive design, gamification, and immersive storyboarding. You have also created a strategy brief that connects your design choices to learner needs and outcomes. Now it is time to bring those ideas to life in a tangible form.
